Ram Altman: the day Sam Altman renamed himself on X

Updated 2026-11-05

On November 4, 2026, Sam Altman’s X display name became “Ram Altman”. For everyone who has been adding and removing DDR5 from a shopping cart for months, it was quite a moment.

1. The remark: most PC RAM sits idle

On the Cheeky Pint podcast, Altman argued that keeping lots of DRAM in personal computers is an inefficient use of scarce memory, and that it is better pooled in data centers.

It landed while RAM prices were at record highs. To people pricing a new build, it sounded like “you weren’t using it anyway”.

2. The backlash: what about my browser tabs?

Gamers, developers and PC communities pushed back hard, and Elon Musk joined the criticism, which only made it louder.

3. The walk-back: have all the RAM you want

Altman said the remarks were taken out of context and that he wants people to have as much RAM as they like, adding “lets build more”.

4. And then the name

When a user suggested he simply rename himself “Ram Altman”, he went along with it and changed his X display name. His handle is still @sama.

That one of the busiest people in AI put his name on a RAM joke says a lot about how real this price spike feels.

5. So what does RAM cost now?

The name changed; the prices did not. Below are today’s lowest DDR5 prices. We record them every morning, so we can all watch whether “build more” actually brings them down.
